of the
Cross
My name is John Kershaw, the vicar of St Hilda's, Audenshaw
and I have been in this post since 1989. My parishioners know
me as Father John. I was trained at the College of the Resurrection,
Mirfield and served my title to Priesthood at St Margaret's,
Hollinwood under Fr. Alec George (RIP).
As you might expect, the style of worship at St Hilda's is
Anglo-Catholic and the Church is also designated as an
A+B parish and a member of F.I.F. (Forward in Faith). Despite
the non-smoking ban imposed in July '07, we still use incense regularly
in our Family Eucharist on Sunday.
Although the family of the church at St Hilda's is small, those who attend
on a regular basis are faithful, dedicated and welcoming.
Should you wish to discuss Baptisms, Weddings or any other matter, I am available after services and on Wednesday evenings between 7:00 and 9:30pm.
The vicarage is in the grounds of the Church and should you
wish to make an appointment, please ring 0161 336 2310.
I look forward to welcoming you to St Hilda's!
Best wishes,
Fr. John
ALL SOULS: A TIME TO REMEMBER
It is good to remember at this time of year those who have died, who once played an important part in our lives. Sometimes we forget people - and the service of All Souls gives our memory a jolt.
As I was looking at this year's list of people for whom we will be praying, it suddenly struck me that one name was missing, and has been for some years.
Albert Royle - known as Denton's Friendship Poet, lived in a small terraced house on Ashton Road and named it 'Friendship Cottage.'
Albert wrote many poems which were published in the local newspaper; he also sent poems to the heads of state in many different countries aned had quite a collection of replies to those letters, from all over the world.
It is now many years since he died and people soon forget. His wife Dorothy
died about four years before him - our Advent candle stand was given in her memory and we also published some of Albert's poems, in the form of a booklet, with the title 'A World of Friendship.'
Here is one of his poems - if you would like to read more, please let us know.
We may even consider re-publishing A World of Friendship to remind everyone of Albert and Dorothy, a much-loved local couple.
KIND FRIENDS
Kind friends are worth remembering,
the bad ones, just forget
they only bring you sadness
which fills you with regret.
Kind friends are worth remembering,
they are worth their weight in gold,
because they think of young ones,
the sick, the weak, the old.
Kind friends are worth remembering,
they make dark days seem bright,
which fills your hearts with gladness,
turning darkness into light.
Kind friends are worth remembering,
that's why I hope and pray,
you will always find true happiness,
and kind friends along the way.
